In the hospital

The morning of January 21st, Gina called an ambulance for Ray because he had a fever, was disoriented, and too weak to get to the car. A few days before that, they had gone to the ER since Ray was coughing so much that he couldn't catch his breath. They found he had a strep infection in his bronchial tubes and gave him antibiotics. They also tested him for influenza, which came up negative, but it's only 60% accurate when it comes up negative. The next day Ray went to his doctor because he was still coughing so much, and the ER doctor hadn't given him anything for the cough. Unfortunately, his symptoms continued to get worse. But he had lots of people praying for him.

please pray for joshua's dad, ray. he's been sick with a bronchial strep infection and is in the hospital now with some other infection that they haven't yet found, but he has a high fever, low oxygen, and is disoriented. thanks.

    • Rachel 'Lauerman' Vaughn thanks for the prayers! no updates yet. hoping we'll hear something soon. joshua's thinking he'll probably go to arkansas, but we're hoping they'll figure out what the problem is soon so he can also know if it's something he would have to worry about bringing back to lazarus.

    • Rachel 'Lauerman' Vaughn they've found something with his heart. i guess his fever this morning was 108. is that even possible? or maybe the details got mixed up as they were passed on. anyway, the cardiologist will be in to meet with gina soon. even with him on oxygen, he's still really low, so hopefully they're finding the cause and can treat it. he's in icu now so they can keep a closer eye on him.

    • Rachel 'Lauerman' Vaughn joshua ended up going after work, so he's on his way. ray's oxygen finally improved, so he's moving from icu to a regular room now. the cardiologist still hasn't been in, so i guess maybe they won't get any answers until tomorrow? thank you so much for the prayers. it sounds like right now his symptoms are improving.

    • Rachel 'Lauerman' Vaughn thanks, matt! my mom decided to spend the night tonight, so that's been a big help. joshua made it to arkansas and said they never got to talk with the doctor today, but ray's on a super powerful antibiotic and is doing better, although he still has a horrible cough and feels pretty awful. thank you so much for the prayers!

    • Rachel 'Lauerman' Vaughn they still haven't seen a doctor since yesterday morning, but the nurses were able to give joshua some information. the ekg was actually fine, so the cardiologist is probably not coming to meet with them. he still has a fever (100.8, it was never 108), in and out of lucidity, low oxygen (alarms were going off all night when his oxygen would drop below 80), and a bad cough. they're waiting on cultures that might give a clue to what the infection is, but right now we still don't know anything.

okay, an update from the doctor. they're still waiting on the mrsa culture, but they don't think he has a bacterial infection, so they'll discontinue the antibiotics which don't seem to be helping anything. they think he has sleep apnea, which is why his oxygen drops when he sleeps. they'll do a sleep study on him to confirm that after he feels better. right now they're fitting him for an oxygen mask to sleep with. they think he just has a bad virus that he needs some time to get over, and they're planning to keep him there until he's better enough to go home. i think that's it.

joshua came home last night, but things are worse today, so he's headed back to arkansas now. ray's back in icu, intubated and sedated in critical condition. gina (ray's wife), kristen (joshua's sister who works with ray), and noah (kristen's almost 4-year-old son) are all sick as well, although they're not as serious. i'm stayig home with evalana and lazarus, and joshua's wearing a mask while in the hospital so that we can try to keep lazarus from getting sick since we don't want a 5-week-old dealing with a virus if we can help it.

    • Rachel 'Lauerman' Vaughn thank you for the prayers. please keep them coming. the doctor said he has a less than 50% chance of survival at this point, but we know God has good plans, and Ray is a Christ-follower, so we don't have to worry about what comes next--either improved health of Heaven.
